The City of Lost Children is an adaptation of a French movie from 1995. Prepared by Psygnosis, the title is an adventure game, in which the action is presented from cameras statically suspended in specific places, as in the first installments of the Resident Evil series.

Story

Children begin to disappear from an orphanage in Paris in mysterious circumstances. One of the orphans, a twelve-year-old girl named Miette, decides to investigate the case and find out where her friends are disappearing. She discovers a strange creature born as a result of experiments by a crazy scientist who needs the childred to steal their dreams. The plot of the game is presented through FMV cut-scenes.

Mechanics

The City of Lost Children is a 3D adventure game in which the character explores subsequent regions of Paris, solving puzzles and talking to the characters she encounters, trying to reach her abducted friends from an orphanage. While exploring new places, the heroine acquires and finds various items, which she can then use in various situations, e.g. to open a locked door or to cause a power failure.

The action is presented through static cameras, showing a selected fragment of the city from a specific perspective. Compared to many other similar adventure games, Psygnosis is devoid of combat.

Technical aspects

The City of Lost Children is distinguished by its excellent audio-visual setting. Detailed background graphics, dark and mysterious stylistics and music playing in the background create an atmosphere of anxiety and create a dystopian world of the future. The production refers to the screenplay of the movie, but is not entirely based on it, using only a part of the plot.
