The Caligula Effect 2 is a sequel to the 2016 jRPG, co-created by historia Inc. and FuRyu Corporation.
Plot
The Caligula Effect 2 is set in a world called Redo, specifically in Tatefushi Academy. It's meant to be a simulation where people can forget their past and live virtual lives free of trouble and sorrow. Though seemingly a paradise, it's closer to a prison. Soon enough, Redo and its creator - Regret - are targeted by X, a mysterious figure who restores its inhabitants' memories in search of allies to end the simulation.
We play as X's first ally and the leader of a resistance known as Go-Home Club. Our task is to expand the group by recruiting more members, helping the people of Redo and, eventually, destroying Regret and Redo as a whole.
Mechanics
The Caligula Effect 2 makes use of the third-person perspective (TPP). The player traverses Redo, talks to its inhabitants and completes quests. During the game we also recruit new members to the Go-Home Club, each having two identities - the virtual one shown in Redo, and the real one which we can only discover over time. To establish relationships with our allies we must complete their personal quests and talk to them in a special chatroom called WIRE; the closer our relationship, the more we'll learn about them.
During our journey we'll face numerous opponents. Combat is turn-based, and to succeed we must skillfully use our party's abilities. The game features a special system called the Imaginary Chain, letting us preview the effects of a successful move; this lets us chain attacks into deadly combos or protect weaker team members in tough situations. By meeting certain conditions we can also activate X-Jack mode and call X for help, who, through song, provides us with various buffs.
Technical aspects
The Caligula Effect 2 makes use of a colorful manga-like artstyle.
