The Bard's Tale: Remastered and Resnarkled is a remaster of The Bard's Tale, a well-received action RPG from 2004. The game is available on PS4 and PSV and was developed by the same studio that worked on other games from this franchise, inXile Entertainment.
Plot
Although the game refers to a classic turn-based RPG series, The Bard's Tale: Remastered and Resnarkled is a spin-off which means that the story presented in this game is not connected to any of the previous titles.
The game's protagonist is the titular Bard who goes on a journey during which he must find Caleigh, a beautiful princess who was kidnapped by members of a demonic cult leaded by Fionnaoch. Before our hero gets to accomplish his task and, what is equally as important – receives his desired moneybag, he must survive numerous less and a little bit more dangerous adventures as well as complete dozens of quests given to him by NPCs.
The plot features a lot of intelligent humor – we can, e.g. find references to various clichés of this genre. The Bard's Tale: Remastered and Resnarkled's another feature is presence of a narrator that comments our hero's actions. He also never misses any chances to make fun of the Bard.
Mechanics
When it comes to gameplay, The Bard's Tale: Remastered and Resnarkled, available on PS4 and PSV, is closer to games such as Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance rather than the previous games from The Bard's Tale series. We observe the action from an isometric point of view. Exploration of visited locations as well as conversations with NPCs and various choices are equally as important as fights with hordes of enemies, which are done in real time.
The hero can use various melee weapons, which are divided into five categories – each one of them has their strong and weak points which means that each weapon acts differently during combat. Songs, that the Bard learns during his adventure, are also important; thanks to them we can summon allies who accompany us during battles. Experience, that we get after winning fights, allows us to get new levels for our hero and increase his combat potential by unlocking new abilities.
Technical aspects
The Bard's Tale: Remastered and Resnarkled's graphics are better than those of the original game. Although the developers didn't change textures nor they implement additional effects, they managed to increase the resolution (the game can be played in 4K on PlayStation 4 Pro) and make the game run in 60 frames per second.
