Team Buddies PS1

A humorous variation of real time strategy maintained in cartoon style. On the battlefields, colorful creatures, reminiscent of anthropomorphic pills of drugs, are battling. Instead of whole armies, console owners control groups of four soldiers.

An unusual RTS developed by Psygnosis. The game combines elements typical of the genre with solutions and stylistics known from the iconic Worms series.

Story

Charming creatures, Buddies, decide to take advantage of the warm summer day and organize a disco. The fun ends when an unknown object obscures the sun and fills the land of Buddies with weapon boxes. Provoked creatures begin to fight each other, dividing themselves into color-themed camps. Over time, it becomes apparent that former friends, and now enemies, were manipulated by the wicked Baddies...

Mechanics

Team Buddies is an unusual RTS, where the players have to collect the necessary resources, construct equipment and perform tasks. The action is presented in isometric projection. The players take control of up to four subordinates, between whom they can switch freely. Other members of their army can be given simple instructions. By collecting the boxes scattered on the map and moving them into a specific field, they gain a chance to produce various weapons, such as pistols and rifles, powerful cannons, as well as deadly vehicles such as tanks.

The devs have prepared several types of missions. In addition to the standard deathmatch, in which the task is to eliminate all enemies and destroy their base, it is also possible to fight for designated points, take over the flag or try to blow up the enemy camp with a powerful explosive. Team Buddies offers not only a single-player campaign mode but also enables up to four people to compete on split screen at the same time.

Technical aspects

Team Buddies, although adopting a colorful and slightly childish style, contains elements excluding it as a title for younger audiences. The exaggerated violence and specific, sometimes vulgar humor classify it as a title at least for teenagers.
