Tangiers for PC is a surreal stealth action game developed by Andalusian Games. The game is the debut project of this independent developer.
Plot
In Tangiers, the players are tasked with exploring a grim, oneiric world. In order to create a compelling and unusual environment, the authors decided to employ the works of a number of artists, including a photographer Man Ray, writers William S. Burroughs and James Ballard, or Throbbing Gristle, a long-standing industrial music quartet.
Mechanics
The authors cite Thief series as one of their main influences. The player is encouraged to complete his goals by employing stealth. The world of the game is patrolled by nightmarish guards – the player has to stick to shadows and sneak through the lit areas to avoid being detected or captured. We are left with a number of useful items, including traps that will help us in disposing of more troublesome opponents. The level structure offers a lot of freedom, including accessing rooftops and parts of the area that are detached from the ground level.
The game introduces an interesting eavesdropping mechanic. Our hero has the ability to record words and sentences elicited by other characters in order to release them further on as a means of distracting our opponents. The world is influenced by our actions – if we have chosen to deal with the obstacles at hand by brute force, the environment around us will begin to disintegrate, with certain elements losing their original shape. On the other hand, a more stealthlike and nimble approach will allow us to get through the area without any unpleasant effects.
