Tales of Xillia 2 on PlayStation 3 is the fourteenth part of one of the most popular and longest-existing jRPG series. The cycle was born in 1995 on the SNES console, and its creation was the responsibility of Namco (now Bandai Namco). Under the recognisable brand name appeared several dozen different productions, which were published on all the most important hardware platforms. Tales of Xillia 2 is the second direct sequel in the history of the previous part of the cycle Tales of..... The production was released only a year after the release of Tales of Xillia and introduced many minor improvements to the gameplay model, which were demanded by fans, as well as introduced a completely new main character.
Story
Tales of Xillia 2 takes place one year after the events presented in Tales of Xillia. After combining two worlds, Rieze Maxia and Elympios, their inhabitants try to find a new situation and build a better future. The protagonist of the game is Ludger Will Kresnik, a young boy belonging to a family whose representatives have the unique power to move freely between different worlds. Ludger saves a little girl named Elle Mel Marta from danger and is seriously injured as a result. Burdened with bills for treatment he has to work off his debt by performing tasks for the Spirius corporation, whose aim is to eliminate alternative dimensions threatening the existence of the whole universe. By the way, she tries to help the orphaned and lost Elle, who wants to meet her father again, who is to stay in the legendary land of Canaan. During the adventure Ludger is accompanied by all the most important heroes of Tales of Xillia.
Mechanics
The gameplay model in Tales of Xillia 2 uses the formula of its predecessor. Players visit both old and completely new locations, as well as alternative dimensions. Production again does not have a large map of the world where we can move freely, instead we travel on open and interconnected maps. The most important change affecting the course of the game is the debt system. Ludger has to regularly deposit large sums of money into the Spirius corporation account, which he gets from quests and main tasks. By paying the next installments we unblock access to new places and equipment, as well as missions.
The game uses a virtually identical arcade combat system located in Tales of Xillia. Battles take place in separate and closed arenas, to which we are transferred after attacking enemies lurking on us in the visited locations. Characters benefit from special abilities and spells. Also comes back the possibility of using so-called links, i.e. passive cooperation between two participating heroes.
Technical issues
The Tales of Xillia 2 does not differ significantly from its predecessor in terms of audiovisual setting. The creators once again used the models of the characters, as well as the already known locations from the only one, while enriching the fictional game world with completely new and previously unseen fantastic places.
