Ground Pounders is a spin-off of the Sword of the Stars series, a turn-based battle strategy inspired by the cult Panzer General. As the leader of one of the three races, we fight battles on the surface of various planets, using a deck of special cards that produce unique and powerful effects. In addition to three campaigns for a single player, the production also includes multiplayer mode.
Ground Pounders is another game from the established series of space strategies called Sword of the Stars, created by Kerberos Productions studio. However, this is not a direct continuation of the last part of the cycle, Sword of the Stars 2: The Lords of Winter, but an independent title set in the same universe. This is a turn-based strategy inspired by the cult series Panzer General.
This time the game focuses on the military side of space exploration and the player plays the military commander of one of the three sides of the conflict: the people, the lizard Tarkans or the insectoidal Hivers. During the three campaigns, which have been prepared for loners, we fight battles with hostile races, trying to dominate more and more planets. Battles take place in a diverse environment, such as lava river-crossed plains or craters covered with craters after the impacts of desert meteorites. The natural conditions in which we fight have a significant impact on the course of the battle - e.g. the presence of rivers or ravines makes bridges a strategic element on the board, whose control (or destruction, depending on the situation) gives us an advantage over the opponent. Convenient terrain can also become a place to locate fortifications where the enemy will break their teeth.
All three factions have a total of more than 80 units of different types. It is important to take care of the good condition of our branches, as with the progress of the campaign they gain experience, which translates into a gradual increase in their capabilities and effectiveness in the field chosen by us. In addition to these fortifications, we can also place an airport for our flying vehicles on the battlefield, and there is no shortage of the opportunity to call for orbital bombardment in order to carry out a pogrom in the ranks of our enemies. One of the most important and interesting elements of Ground Pounders, however, are special cards, unlocked for achievements in the game. They represent a variety of events and abilities unique to each of the three races in the game. These are powerful effects that can dramatically change the situation on the battlefield. Having collected more of these cards, we can assemble our own deck and even save some of its configurations.
In addition to these three campaigns, the game also features a skirmish mode with dozens of individual scenarios to be played. In addition, everything you get in one-person games can be used later in a game against living opponents. Sword of the Stars: Ground Pounders also has an extensive editor of missions and units to share our works with the game community. The production also includes an encyclopaedia that introduces the history, personalities and technology of the Sword of the Stars universe.
