Sublevel Zero Redux for PC, PS4 and XONE is a remade version of Sublevel Zero, an FPP shooter released for PC/Windows. The new edition, developed by Sigtrap Games and dedicated to eight-generation consoles, offers new content, and was customized to support a gamepad-friendly control scheme. However, the game is essentially almost identical to its PC predecessor.
Mechanics
Our task is to explore an underground site peculiar for the lack of gravity there. The installation had been built by an advanced alien civilization and then abandoned to decay. The corridors and rooms are filled with a multitude of state-of-the-art technologies, the gathering of which is our main objective. Unfortunately, the area begins to disintegrate, making our task much harder than it had seemed at the beginning.
The game was inspired by genre classics such as Descent or Forsaken. This means that we are free to travel around the three-dimensional world, while the levels are built in a way that renders names like “ceiling” or “floor” useless, while combat becomes much more interesting and demanding.
The authors have also introduced a number of elements known from roguelike games – the maps are generated randomly, with a special algorithm governing the complexity of the levels. Moreover, there’s no way to save our progress, and each death is permanent and forces us to begin a new playthrough. Our machine can be modified with the crafting system, which enables us to gather items and resources and use them to build new types of weaponry, performance-increasing parts, or other useful items.
Misc.
Sublevel Zero is an enhanced version of a freeware title developed in the course of three days on behalf of Ludum Dare 29, one of the most popular game development events. As can be expected, the commercial version is much more complex and visually pleasing.
