Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition is a refreshed (not only graphically) and enriched with new content version of the cult RTS from 2002, titled Stronghold: Crusader. The new version was developed by the FireFly Studios team, which has been overseeing the development of the series from the beginning.
Story
Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition offers story campaigns set during the times of the first, second, and third crusades, as well as allowing us to participate in conflicts of states established by the crusaders. We can lead to victory knights of Richard the Lionheart or the armies of Saladin, or participate in the sieges of Nicaea, Jerusalem and Antioch, as well as the battle of Heraclea.
Gameplay
Similar to all other games under this banner, Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition is a strategy game that combines elements of a city builder with the possibility of fighting medieval battles. We not only build the titular fortresses, whose walls can withstand any attack, but also recruit an army. The military serves us both for defense and offensive actions, and during battles we must demonstrate tactical sense, skillfully using the capabilities of individual units (from infantry, through cavalry, to siege machines).
This is not the end, because during the game you also need to take care of the economy. On our shoulders rests both the necessity of fulfilling the whims of citizens, and keeping an eye on taxes.
New features in the Definitive Edition
In addition to the campaigns known from the original, Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition includes additional historical campaigns. In addition, previously inaccessible "Sands of Time" battle trails are waiting to be checked out here. The authors also modified the size of the maps (which have become larger) and the number of options available in skirmish mode.
In addition, previously unavailable soldiers were prepared (Bedouin warriors equipped with unique attributes and abilities), as well as additional rulers with whom we can compete (each of them has their own castle and tactics).
Coop and other game modes
We can play Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition alone or in multiplayer mode over the Internet (for up to 8 people). We can compete or cooperate with other players, and a new skirmishes were prepared with cooperation in mind. Thanks to the support of Steam Workshop, players can independently create custom scenarios.
Improved graphics and sound
Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition stands out from the original due to its significantly improved graphics, which were created from scratch, based on the original illustrations. Additionally, for the game's needs, dialogue lines were re-recorded (with the participation of actors known from the original). The game is played to the accompaniment of music composed by Robert L. Euvino.
