Strife: The Veteran Edition is a remastered and content-enriched version of the classic FPS with adventure elements called Strife, which debuted in 1996. This item was developed by the authors of the original, i.e. Rogue Entertainment studio, while its release took place with the participation of Nightdive Studios, a company specializing in the restoration of popular games from the past.
Plot
Strife: Veteran Edition presents us with a bleak vision of the future. Humanity was decimated by a deadly virus that appeared on Earth after the comet hit. The mysterious plague has claimed millions of lives, and among those who have managed to survive are the members of the group known as The Order, usurping the right to control the rest of the remaining surviving population. In the fight against them the resistance movement called Front, which the main character joins after escaping from prison, got involved. As you can guess, from now on the freedom of mankind rests on the shoulders of this former mercenary, who, led by an agent using the pseudonym Blackbird, takes part in dangerous missions aimed at the sensitive points of The Order.
Mechanics
In Strife: Veteran Edition the action is observed from the first person perspective (FPP). The game consists of 28 extensive and interconnected levels, including both industrial complexes and medieval towns. Unlike most other FPSs of this era, we don't just eliminate hordes of enemies when playing.
We get the next tasks through talks with neutral characters, and the story is expanded with new threads over time. In addition, the missions are varied, and during them we deal with both the elimination of specific people and rescuing allies from oppression or even obtaining specific items. However, the markers present on the minimap lead us to our goal (which we cannot find in the original). The reward for their implementation are new elements of equipment or money that we can spend in the stores to buy equipment we are interested in.
Nevertheless, the fight also plays an important role here, and we eliminate our enemies both with a battle cry on our lips, making use of a flamethrower or machine gun, and quietly, using a crossbow or knife.
Game modes
Apart from the single player campaign in Strife: Veteran Edition, multiplayer mode is also available. In the multiplayer, the gameplay variant called Capture the Chalice is noteworthy; the mode based on the classic Capture the Flag was supposed to appear already in the original, but years ago it was finally abandoned.
Technical aspects
Strife: Veteran Edition stands out from the original with its improved graphics. It was enhanced, among other things, by dynamic lighting, and made sure that the game supports high panoramic resolutions. Other improvements include the ability to customize the control scheme to individual preferences, regardless of whether you play the mouse and keyboard or on the gamepad.
