Steam Squad is a turn-based tactical war game for PC that brings to mind such classics of the genre as Jagged Alliance or Silent Storm. It was developed by a debuting Russian-American independent studio called Bretwalda Games.
Plot
Steam Squad offers six campaigns — two for each nation. The action takes place in a reality alternative to the World War I, however significantly expanded compared to its historic counterpart — and for this reason called simply the Grand War. Three superpowers take part in the conflict. Tianxia is an oriental power that controls almost the entire Asia and Australia. The Holy Roman Empire spans the whole continental Europe, North America, and western Africa. The third nation is the British Empire that, apart from its native islands, controls the majority of South America and eastern Africa.
Mechanics
In the game, we assume command over a unit of several soldiers divided into three separate classes. Each one has its unique abilities, equipment, and weapons. The last element includes, among others, machine guns, portable artillery, sniper rifles, grenades, first aid kits, and so on. What’s important, our soldiers are no superheroes so taking casualties during missions is inevitable. To succeed, our subordinates will have to use their unique skills as well as various weapons and cars, tanks, or artillery located in the mission area. Our ultimate goal is to lead our superpower to global domination.
Technical aspects
Steam Squad for PC features clear and detailed graphics that style-wise resembles the titles mentioned in the introduction. The battlefield is presented from an isometric camera. Thanks to the Unity engine, Steam Squad allows cross-platform play between users of Windows, Linux, and Mac OS.
