Statik for PlayStation 4 has been created by Tarsier Studios. Previously, the developers worked on the LittleBigPlanet series, as well as co-developed Tearaway Unfolded. This time around, players receive a standalone production that utilizes new functionalities offered by Virtual Reality.
Plot
The game takes players to a laboratory in which scientists conduct experiments to discover the full potential of the human brain; however, what motivates them remains a mystery. The story begins when the main protagonist wakes up in a hospital bed with his hands trapped in a small device; without seeing his fingers, one cannot say what is inside the electronic box. It is quickly revealed that this aspect is the core of the research conducted on the main protagonist. In the game, a player is accompanied by a doctor, who follows our actions and comments on them, often in a humorous way. His identity, however, remains a secret highlighted by the fact, that his face is censored with a special filter.
Mechanics
The PS4 release of Statik utilizes, in a very interesting way, the functionalities and principles of PlayStation VR. With the PlayStation VR headgear on, one cannot see his hands, the same way the protagonist cannot. All the puzzles in the game build on an interesting mechanic – since a solution of a given puzzle is a secret, one never fully knows which button to press on the controller at a given moment. The solution pattern reflects the process of learning the construction of given devices, which change with every new puzzle. These puzzles base on player’s intuition and perceptivity, as well as the ability to manipulate the elements of the environment. In the game, one can freely look around simply by moving their head while by moving the controller, the player translates their intentions into the protagonist’s hands.
Technical aspects
Statik for PS4 is set in a 3D environment. Visuals implemented herein do not deviate from the standards one got to familiarize himself with when playing other PlayStation VR games – both the elements of the environment and character models are not rich with details, however, the overall execution is neat enough to deliver some positive experiences. Moreover, the game requires the PlayStaion VR headgear.
