Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is a space simulator embedded in the universe of the popular science fiction series, in which, under the supervision of experienced instructors, we can test ourselves as a cadet of the elite Star Academy. After the 25th Anniversary and Judgment Rites, the game is another Interplay title based on the Star Trek license. Its prototype is the production of Starfleet Command - Starship Bridge Simulator released 2 years earlier for SEGI and Nintendo consoles.
The hero of the game is David Forester cadet, who goes to the elite command school in San Francisco and participates in a series of missions preparing him to take command of one of the Federation's star ships. Our protoplasta is supported by a crew consisting of a Vulcan officer named Sturek, Andorianka Vandy M'Gii and people: engineer Robin Brady, helmsman Jana Akton and navigator Geoff Corin. In front of our team there will be 20 simulated scenarios in which we will fight against Klingons, Romulans and rebels from the Vanguard organization.
The mechanics of the simulation resembles the game TIE Fighter, in which a large part of the action is observed from the cockpit level. We are introduced to the reality of each mission by a detailed briefing, highlighting possible scenarios for the development of the situation. Among the missions, we are also responsible for a detailed inspection of the ship and its damage, as well as for setting the allocation of energy according to the expected strength of the opponent. FMV sequences play an important role in the game, which are not only part of the story. During them we are forced to make a number of choices which may have a positive or negative impact on the morale of our crew, and in extreme situations may even lead to removal from the Academy.
The game frame is at a high level. Starfleet Academy takes advantage of graphics accelerators, and with numerous video sequences, the game takes up to 5 CDs. In the intermittent scenes, apart from a whole mass of extras, we will also see actors known from the series: William Shatner as Captain Kirk, Walter Koenig as Pavel Chekov and George Takei as Hikar Sulu. Ron James is responsible for the game's soundtrack, co-author of music for many episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. In addition to the basic campaign and single player scenarios, programmers have also prepared an extensive multiplayer mode, in which up to 32 people can take part at the same time.
