Standpoint is a first-person puzzle game, created by independent London-based studio Unruly Attractions. The team was led by Nathan John, who has worked on the PC version of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Despite the unsuccessful campaign on Kickstarter, the production was noticed and financed by the French publisher Bulkypix.
Mechanics
Mechanics in Standpoint were inspired by Aliens vs. Predator and the movements of the Alien , for which every surface could become a potential floor. Developers from Unruly Attractions based their production on the unique possibility of changing the orientation of individual locations in such a way that each of the walls of a given room could become a point of reference for the player.
The game boils down to traversing successive locations and solving logic puzzles, using the aforementioned mechanics, thanks to which any obstacle we encounter may turn out to be an extremely useful element, if only we set the orientation of the environment in a skillful way. Of course, the whole thing is not just proverbial art for art's sake. A mysterious voice of the narrator leads us through the subsequent rooms. As the game progresses, we discovers important facts about the complex itself and our role in the story. Therefore, the game refers in a quite clear way to the iconic Portal series by Valve.
Technical aspects
The game's graphics, powered by the Unity engine, are of an average level, which is sufficiently compatible with the convention adopted by Standpoint. Thanks to the use of cel-shading technology, the whole thing has at the same time acquired a characteristic cartoonish style. The game is accompanied by Daniel Murdoch's original soundtrack and professional voice acting.
