An action-filled platform game with logic puzzle elements. The title is based on the license of a popular animated TV series - SpongeBob SquarePants - and continues the story shown in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. In the game, developed by Behaviour Interactive, one assumes the role of the titular sponge and his bizarre friends to restore the former glory of their underwater metropolis - Bikini Bottom.

SpongeBob: HeroPants is an arcade platform game putting a strong emphasis on the action and simple logical puzzles. The game is based on the popular animated TV series about an amicable sponge and continues the story depicted by The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. During the game, a player gets to control six most popular characters of the TV series. The X360, PSV and 3DS release of the game has been developed by Behaviour Interactive.

Plot

The story in SpongeBob: HeroPants picks up right after the events from the hit movie; this time, however, the action is set beneath the sea level. Bikini Bottom – the city inhabited by our heroes – turns into a grim and devastated place that affects the reality surrounding SpongeBob and his friends. Once beautiful and full of color, Bikini Bottom is visited by weird creatures – all this because of a magical piece of paper, on which all the nightmares, when written down, become real.

Mechanics

To restore the order, a player assumes the role of six characters known from the animated series. Apart from SpongeBob, the game features Patrick Star, Squidward Tentacles, Sandy Cheeks, Mr. Krabs, and Plankton. Each protagonist can assume his or her superhero form, in which he/she gains additional abilities, necessary to solve a number of logical puzzles and beat the arcade challenges. The entire adventure takes place across twelve unique maps divided into three main categories depending on their main theme – prehistoric, warzone, and the imagination land.

Technical aspects

Visuals offered by SpongeBob: HeroPants for X360, PSV and 3DS are simple, yet consistent with the TV series’ style. Apart from their devastation, all the in-game locations are incredibly colorful. The entire experience follows a specific, comic-book-like convention spiced with a large dose of humor.
