Splasher for PC, PS4 and etc. is an original platformer game created by Splashteam – an independent developer and a studio founded by Romain Clyde, former employee of Ubisoft, whose experience includes Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends. Plug In Digital published the game.
Plot
Splasher takes the player to the headquarters of the Inkorp Corporation. Its friendly workers (Splashers) used to simply do their job on daily basis. However, the ominous Docteur (the manager) decided to break this routine in a painful way, aiming to bring his subordinates to their knees. One of the employees is the protagonist, who tries to stop the evil figure and save his co-workers. This main character has one unusual weapon only at their disposal – it is the so-called Splatter Cannon, which grants the protagonist a significant advantage over his opponents.
Mechanics
Splasher for PC, PS4 and etc. is played from a side view. The core of the experience is made up of exploring extensive locations, avoiding many traps, and fighting the enemies encountered. All of these actions involve using the gun, which shoots with color ink. Thus the protagonist can stick himself to objects colored blue, which also allows to use them as ladders. The player can use the orange ink to bounce the protagonist off objects; when it comes to attacking the adversaries, the red ink is used. The player encounters different enemies, also the larger bosses. Different defensive mechanisms constitute another threat to the protagonist – one can find rotary saws, acid geysers or automatic cannons.
Because the gameplay is incredibly dynamic, the main character dies relatively often. However, this is not a matter of coincidence, since the creators had consulted these premises with professional speed-runners. Learning on one's own mistakes and the ability to make quick decisions is the key to victory here, though quick reflexes will also come in handy. The player's actions are monitored in real time by the game's scoring system; one's achievements can be shared on the game's online leaderboards.
Game modes
Splasher for PC, PS4 and etc. offers different game modes. Apart from the standard story mode, one can launch here a Time Attack, which requires them to complete a given level within a specified amount of time. Apart from that, the game brings three speedrun variants: Selfish Speedrun (no collectibles, quarantine zones or Splashers waiting for help), Standard Speedrun (an ordinary run except for the stopwatch displayed on the screen), and Gotta Catch'em All (one has to save all the Splashers present in particular levels).
Technical aspects
Splasher offers high-quality 2D visuals representing a cartoonish graphic style. Although the visuals are not as rich here, the game brings popular platformers into mind, such as the aforementioned Rayman series. A soundtrack consisting of fast-paced, electronic music, complements the experience.
