SpellRogue is an RPG game with card and roguelike mechanics, reminiscent of, among others, the best-selling Slay the Spire. The game was developed by the independent studio Guidelight Games.
Plot
The action of SpellRogue takes place in a fantasy land. The peace there was disturbed by the appearance of the so-called Void Walkers. Attempts to restore the old balance are undertaken by wizards, into whom we transform during the game. Their task is to find the source of corruption and destroy it before things completely get out of control.
Mechanics
In SpellRogue, we take control of magicians, each of whom has spells related to a specific element. For example, Azar specializes in fire, Hazel draws strength from the earth, while Lapis controls water. During the game, we explore the world map, moving from point to point, and we fight duels with the Void Walkers.
The fights take place in turn-based mode, and during them we play cards related to specific offensive, defensive and healing spells. As we progress, we acquire better spells and collect various artifacts, which over time allows us to face increasingly greater challenges.
Playing cards was done in an unusual way, because after the start of each turn we throw Mana Dice, which are our basic resource. Numbers from the dice determine which powers will be able to use on the battlefield.
While simple spells usually require low values (for example, ranging from 2 to 5), more advanced spells may involve the need to use more complicated combinations, like getting twice the same number, using dice of a strictly defined value, or "charging" the dice until a certain value is reached. Additionally, in the case of some spells, their effectiveness depends on what bones we "feed" them with.
In order to achieve success on the battlefield, we must also carefully observe the moves of our enemies and understand their strengths and weaknesses. The matter is complicated by the fact that adversaries can not only attack us directly, but also sabotage our efforts. For this purpose, enemies impose various negative effects on us, for example, they weaken our spells or set them on fire (which causes each of their use to damage us) or condemn us to poor dice roll results.
