Speedball 2 is a futuristic combination of a sporting position with an action game, a variation on such disciplines as handball or American football. This product is a remake of a classic title from 1990, and behind its creation stands the Parisian studio Kylotonn Entertainment, known so far mainly from the Bet on Soldier series. Mike Montgomery, a man co-responsible for The Chaos Engine or Z: Steel Soldiers also took part in the project.
This project allows us to use several gameplay modes, dedicated to different types of recipients. For example, a single player can play a friendly game against a computer, a cup, a league season or a career. For enthusiasts of multi-player fun, there is a LAN or Internet game option. The last of the above mentioned possibilities allows us to get deeper into international competitions, tournament ladders, various rankings, as well as to check out the offer of the virtual shop, where we are able to buy equipment for our wards.
Things strictly gameplay's focus on the modern, electronics-filled pitch, after which, depending on our tastes, run unusual characters, from robots, and on the amazons. The heroes are divided into two teams of several people, with the aim of placing a small metal ball in a goal guarded by the crew of opponents. Due to the fact that the fight between teams is often very fierce, in the three-dimensional arena there is no shortage of unclean plays, reminiscent of views straight from brutal battles. The whole action is observed through the prism of the TV report, looking at the competitors from several camera shots (e.g. from a bird's eye view). From time to time we also see animated interludes, showing us from close up to individual warriors. It is worth mentioning that in order to properly present their animations, programmers took advantage of the benefits of a proven motion capture system. The attention paid to the technical aspects of Speedball 2 is also demonstrated by the fact that this production has been adapted to work with AGEIA's physical chipsets. Artificial Intelligence algorithms, in turn, were developed with the participation of the SpirOps team, a group that became famous in the industry for creating an AI for the Tom Clancy's Sprinter Cell series.
