Space Rangers: Quest

Space Rangers: Quest, released on PC, AND and iOS, was developed by SNK Games studio and refers in a loose way to previous editions of the series, namely Space Rangers and Space Rangers 2: Dominators. The game is a text adventure - however, developers have tried to make the graphics more appealing by presenting some elements in three-dimensional graphics.

Plot

Space Rangers: Quest takes place in the universe known from the previous editions of the series. We play as a pilot of an interstellar spacecraft. The plot focuses on a mysterious threat capable of annihilating all living organisms in the galaxy. Our task is to discover its origin and find a way to deal with the danger before it is too late.

Mechanics

At first glance, the gameplay in Space Rangers: Quest does not differ from the other text-based adventures. The protagonist travels to far corners of the galaxy where we can start various quests and learn interesting news about the world from various races. During the exploration, our spaceship can get attacked by enemies. We can also come across randomly generated events. It is worth mentioning that the player can choose between different solutions to the same problem, playing as a warrior, merchant or adventurous pirate. The plot is full of numerous twists.

Conversations with encountered characters, solving puzzles and battles involving many ships are presented in a text form. During dialogues, we can choose the lines spoke by our character. During the fights, we select one of several commands (e.g. "Stop the fire"). By completing quests, we receive credits, which we can then spend on various ship improvements - from engines, through shields, to weapons.

The graphics elements are interesting. The galaxy is depicted on a two-dimensional map but we can see our ship in 3D. The images shown to the player are accompanied by narration.

Technical aspects

Space Rangers: Quest for PC, AND and iOS is done well. The color scheme of the interface, reminiscent of a ship's cockpit, can be customized and the protagonist's space vehicle model is rich in detail. The convention chosen by the creators allowed for maintaining relatively low hardware requirements.
