Space Grunts 2 is a science fiction-strategy game with clearly defined mechanics typical of the roguelike sub-genre. The production is a continuation of Space Grunts from 2016, but is quite different from its predecessor - above all, it enriches the well-known formula with solutions characteristic for card games. The title was developed and released by the authors of the first part - OrangePixel studio.

Plot

The action of Space Grunts 2 takes place in the universe known from Space Grunts. In this setting we can see a clear inspiration from the science fiction works of the 1950s - there is no shortage of colourful aliens and spectacular futuristic ships and weapons. It is worth noting that the plot does not play an important role in this game, being only a background for fun.

Mechanics

In Space Grunts 2, we observe the action from above - from the top-down perspective. The player controls members of an expedition team who explore dangerous places. The gameplay is about exploring levels, and our main task is to cope with the challenges posed to us by the computer.

A very big role in the game in Space Grunts 2 plays randomness. Each game is slightly different - we get different goals, maps, and events. There is also a set of special modifiers related to the influence of the plant spores on our enemies or characters.

The game introduces a lot of elements associated with card games. As the game progresses, we acquire items - including weapons and armour and other things - that have the form of cards. After being lifted, they go to our deck and we can use them for further struggles. If you don't want something in your repertoire, you can decide not to raise a card.

When there is a fight, both sides play one of their cards alternately. The system is not too complicated - it is designed to work quickly and efficiently, giving the player the opportunity to move from one clash or challenge to the next in an instant.

In their work, the creators have included one more characteristic solution - dealing with special challenges, we can obtain trinkets , which can help us in future missions. If we perform a large enough number of tasks, we can also gain permanent reinforcements and increase the level of the character - this allows us to buy cards offering additional passive bonuses.

Game modes

In Space Grunts 2, we can only play alone. The basis of the gameplay here is an extensive single-player mode.

Technical aspects

Space Grunts 2 has simple, two-dimensional graphics, which in terms of style resembles what we know from the first production in the series. We are dealing here with a pixel art (retro) graphics style, referring to the games that were popular in the 1950s. The whole thing has been enriched with slightly more contemporary animations and light effects (although there is no need to talk about exceptional spectacularity or modernity).
