Sorcerer King: Rivals for PC is an expansion for Sorcerer King, a turn-based 4x strategy game, released in 2015. Both games were developed by Stardock Corporation, the authors of, for example, Elemental: Fallen Enchantress, Ashes of the Singularity, and Galactic Civilization series.
Mechanics
In the basic version of the game, we assumed the role of a mortal ruler, who attempted to stop the titular Sorcerer King before he became a god, which in turn would destroy the whole world. In Sorcerer King: Rivals, the roles are reversed. Our protagonist tries to join the pantheon of deities, while other forces try to stop us. Nevertheless, our character is not the only one. Sorcerer King is still in the game, resulting in a race to see who will be the first to complete the so called ritual of joining.
Sorcerer King: Rivals on PC introduces two new factions – King Bazzar’s dwarves, and necromants led by Archmage Velemor. Each of these factions offer new troops, spells, and technologies.
Sorcerer King forces have also been reinforced, with three new leutenants joining the ranks. As a result, the number of available enemy commanders have increased to five. At the beginning of each battle, the engine randomly chooses two commanders, who are then trying to stop us in our tracks.
Sorcerer King: Rivals also introduces a number of new adventures, completion of which nets useful items and resources to our forces. Additionally, the authors shared an editor, allowing players to create their own missions. Moreover, the game is linked with Steam Workshop, which allows for quick and easy search and installation of fan modifications.
Technical aspects
The title is available in two variants: either as a stand-alone expansion, or as a cheaper DLC for those who already have the core version of Sorcerer King.
