A Polish text-based RPG about travelling through a post-apocalyptic world. The gameplay in Songs of Rats is about developing our characters, making difficult decisions and combat - we can fight as a team, dealing with robots or humans who underwent cybernetic modifications.
Songs of Rats is a text-based role-playing game with roguelike elements, in which we delve into a universe full of mysteries of past civilizations and hostile creatures. The development was handled by the Polish independent studio Tesseract Games, led by Tomasz Smigielski.
Story
Hundreds of years ago, a monumental space battle took place in the orbit of a forgotten gas giant. Detailed knowledge about the identity of the fighting factions and the causes of the clash did not survive, however, it is known that the use of a mysterious weapon led to the formation of the Wreckage.
This place is a tangled structure suspended in void, full of destroyed ships and space stations. Thanks to advanced self-repair technologies, many of the wrecks are suitable for habitation. They are occupied by beings not only human.
Gameplay
In Songs of Rats we explore the brutal world of the Wreckage, traversing a labyrinth of corridors, wild hydroponic gardens, abandoned laboratories, armories, factories, and even deserted entertainment centers. We find fragments of various civilizations and cultures, delving into the secrets of this dark universe.
Although we encounter companions on our path, most beings are not friendly towards us. The influential group in the Wreckage turns out to be made up of people subjected to extreme cybernetic modifications, called "posthumans".
Confrontations in the game depend on the character's skills determined by three main statistics: body, mind, and spirit. Stats related to armor and weapons are also counted and they can affect the damage dealt by us and by opponents. The battles are conducted in turn-based mode, and attacks are launched simultaneously by both sides. With each day of the journey, we receive a random number of action points, which we must fully utilize to move forward.
Engine and graphics
Created using Unity, Songs of Rats tells its story through text and suggestive lo-fi images.
