Songbringer for PC, PS4 and XONE is an original RPG inspired by The Legend of Zelda series. The game has been developed by a one-man independent studio called Wizard Fu Games. Among other platforms, the game is available on PC, PS4 and XONE.
Plot
In Songbringer, a player assumes the role of Roq Epimetheos - a hero traveling across the galaxy onboard the titular spaceship. He is accompanied by Jib - previously a promising programmer, who on his deathbed transferred his consciousness into a skybot (a small machine). The game starts when the main protagonists land on the planet of Ekzerra and in one of its caves they find a mysterious nanosword and wake the ancient evil. From that moment on, their task is to prevent the galactic war.
Mechanics
Upon starting the game, a player has to type in a six-character name – a seed for the procedurally generated world, on which the construction of particular planets and the layout of the dungeons waiting for the players to be explored, are based. This is why, a player can return to previously visited places, as well as visit locations discovered by other players. At the beginning of the game, one can choose whether his character will be resurrected after dying or fall victim to the permanent death system.
In Songbringer for PC, PS4 and XONE players observe the action from the top-down perspective, and the gameplay revolves around exploration, discovering the in-game secrets, and fighting numerous foes. On his journey, a player is bound to encounter both minor adversaries and powerful bosses. During the game, one does not acquire experience points - in order to develop the character, a player has to eliminate consecutive enemies and collect ancient artifacts.
This is when Jib comes in - he can scan enemy bodies in search for valuable items. Also, the skybot proves very useful during combat, as it perfectly stuns the enemies. Roq, however, can take care of himself - eating a cactus gives him a psychedelic power, which temporarily enables him to see the objects hidden from the sight of mere mortals. All the collected loot can be brought onboard the Songbringer and given to the blacksmith who works there - combining the collected items results in acquiring powerful pieces of equipment exhibiting extraordinary features.
During the game, a player also gets to explore the dungeons - nine underground locations per visited world. Some of them are theme-based and inside, a player has to solve multiple environmental puzzles and collect items necessary to 'complete' a given world. Moreover, there are also the 'secret dungeons', where one can complete side quests in order to acquire new abilities. The last type of the underground locations offers special challenges featuring extremely high difficulty level.
Game modes
In Songbringer for PC, PS4 and XONE, one can play either alone or in the company of another player, who then assumes the role of Jib (in the single player mode Jib is controlled by the AI). Even though the game does not feature a competitive multiplayer mode, a player can share his achievements on the online ranking boards.
Technical aspects
Songbringer for PC, PS4 and XONE stands out in terms of its 2D pixel art visuals, inspired by 8-bit adventures of Link. The developers decided to enrich the game with modern visual effects, such as the lighting. The entire experience is well complemented with the dedicated, electronic soundtrack.
