SOCOM Video Game Series
A series of tactical third-person perspective (TPP) shooters. The brand was created by Zipper Interactive studio in cooperation with Slant Six Games. Games from the SOCOM series are released exclusively on PlayStation consoles.
The origins of the series date back to 2002 and the games SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs released in a version for the PlayStation 2 console. The production received good ratings (the average on metacritic.com is 82/100) and gained considerable popularity among players due to its functional multiplayer mode. By the decision of the publisher - Sony Computer Entertainment, the idea was developed into a series, which resulted in subsequent installments: SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs (2003) i SOCOM 3: U.S. Navy SEALs (2005). In the following years, developers were busy working on porting the brand to new hardware platforms. This contributed to a mini-cycle of SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo intended for the PlayStation Portable console. Skipping spin-offs like SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Combined Assault (2006) i SOCOM: Confrontation (2008), for the full-fledged sequel - SOCOM. SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs fans had to wait until 2011.
The common element of the games in the series SOCOM is the opportunity to take on the role of soldiers of elite special units - starting with the U.S. Navy Seals, through the German KSK and the British SAS, up to the Russian Spetznaz and the Polish Grom. The challenge presented to the player is the opportunity to take part in a series of missions, often inspired by authentic military operations. Complementing the story-driven single-player campaign is usually an extensive multiplayer mode, allowing a dozen or even several dozen participants to play together.
Unlike many popular TPS or FPS shooters, gameplay in the series SOCOM is geared to a greater extent to elements related to special forces tactics. A large part of this is due to former soldiers, who as consultants took part in the development of games in the series. An interesting fact is that the title of the series SOCOM is an acronym for the American name Special Operations Command.
