Smelter is a 2D hybrid of an action-packed platform game and a strategy. The game is inspired by classic 16-bit productions and offers extensive and unusual gameplay combining well-known solutions. The game was developed by the X Plus Company studio. The publisher is Dangen Entertainment.
Plot
Smelter tells the story of biblical Eve, who tries to find lost Adam shortly after the destruction of the Garden of Eden. The woman accepts the help of a mysterious being - the titular Smelter - who merges with her, giving her superhuman powers and abilities.
Mechanics
The gameplay in Smelter can be roughly divided into two parts. In the first one we move through locations, observing the character from a side-scroll perspective. Our task is to pass various levels - it requires jumping, overcoming various obstacles and fighting with the use of quite simple, arcade system, in which mainly agile fingers count. We also have special abilities, which can be used to hurt enemies or influence the environment.
The second part of the game is like a strategy (with a top-down view), in which we gradually build our own empire and fight with enemies, using various combat units.
As the game progresses, we also develop the protagonist's skills - the player has access to three different ability trees and dozens of upgrades, the latter of which we gain by completing challenges in the game world. In Smelter we can also find a lot of secrets and surprises (including special levels and enhancements).
Game modes
In Smelter we can play only solo. The main game mode is the story campaign.
Technical aspects
Smelter has a rather simple, 2D graphic design. The graphics were developed in the pixel art style - it refers to the classic games from the 80s and 90s of the last century. We have a lot of distinctive colours and interesting designs of characters and monsters. The whole is not badly animated and makes a generally good impression.
