SimGolf is Maxis' first "sim" in which the creators completely abandoned economic strategies typical of the genre series, serving players with a racial sport game. This title allows players to build their own golf course from scratch using the Course Architect tool and then play on the prepared terrain. By creating the field of our dreams we can raise or lower the ground in any way we like, add trees, lakes, traps and other natural obstacles.
The gameplay itself is presented in a way typical of most golf games. The playing field is viewed from a wide perspective from behind the player's back. Before giving the blow we have the opportunity to take a virtual walk, thanks to which we will get to know better all the nooks and crannies lurking on us in the field. The impact itself can be seen live or in repetitions, using six different camera views.
For the first time in the history of computer golf, SimGolf uses a new mouse-swing interface that allows you to control the stick with mouse movements. This makes it more intuitive and accurately reproduces the actual golfer's behaviour during the impact. For amateurs of proven solutions, however, the creators left the possibility of choosing the classic three-click control method.
Robert Trent Jones Jr. participated in the work on the game. Thanks to this cooperation, all players who prefer to focus on pure gameplay instead of creating their own fields, will play on the faithfully reproduced fields of The Prince Course and Rancho La Quinta designed by the master. The game's CD also includes a video guide prepared with the participation of Jones, concerning field design and game strategy and technique.
In addition to having fun for one player, SimGolf provides the opportunity to play "virtual four" with real opponents via the Internet or the local network.
