A free expansion to Shovel Knight, a well-received platform title developed by Yacht Club Games. This time, the players received a completely new hero – Plague Knight, who is known for being one of the antagonists in the base game. After his defeat at the hands of Shovel Knight, the fledging protagonist decides to leave his former allies and embark on a journey in search of ingredients necessary for creation of a mysterious, powerful potion.

Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows is a free expansion for Shovel Knight, a platformer, in which the player assumed the role of a shovel-wielding armor-clad protagonist. The add-on features a different character - this time, we control the Plague Knight – one of the main antagonists in the original game. After his defeat in a battle against the eponymous Shovel Knight, he decides to turn on his current fellows and set out for a journey in search of the ingredients needed to brew an incredibly powerful potion.

Along with a new protagonist, the game introduces completely different gameplay mechanics. Despite the fact that most adventures take place on the same maps, the Plague Knight has a set of completely different abilities at his disposal. Although we lose our means to dig, we can throw bombs and fly on short distances instead. The changes require you to rethink you methods and adopt new plans to complete the well-known levels and defeat subsequent enemies. New tactics are also needed for battling previously unseen opponents and bosses.

Additional, the expansion features a crafting system, and Plague Knight, as a proficient alchemist, can gather various elements and combine them, producing special formulas. Thanks to this, we have temporal access to new attacks, enhancements, and other skills that will come in handy during his journey.

The visuals are left as they were; pixels dominate the screen, reminding the players of the golden years of 8-bit gaming.
