Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue is a two-dimensional metroidvania platform game. The title was developed by Ladybug as part of the promotional campaign for Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux. Originally it was available for free.
Plot
Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue for PC takes place during the events shown in Strange Journey. The players assume the role of Jack Frost, one of the demons known from Shin Megami Tensei series. Together with the pumpkin-headed Jack’o’Lantern he fights demonic hordes. The simple story can be discovered through conversations with encountered characters.
Mechanics
Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue for PC is a typical metroidvania game. The title features a two-dimensional world that is observed from the side perspective. The gameplay is action-based and focused on exploration of connected locations and on combat with various enemies – including powerful bosses. The player controls only Jack Frost, but he can use the aid of Jack’o’Lantern floating nearby at any time. His help is needed for getting through some of the obstacles.
The game features some RPG mechanics like character level (it increases when player gains experience for defeating enemies) and mana points depleted while casting spells. The protagonists and enemies have various resistances (for example, Jack Frost is invulnerable to ice but he must watch out for fire), forcing the player to use various tactics. Taking advantage of various elements is useful when solving riddles. Additionally, the player can use items that regenerate health or mana. They can be bought for the currency dropped by enemies – it’s called macca.
Technical aspects
Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue for PC features cartoon-like, two-dimensional graphics and dynamic soundtrack.
