Shieldwall

Shieldwall is a strategy game from Nezon Productions. Developers from this independent studio have also worked on Discharge and Format, but both of these titles have gone through without much echo among players. Shieldwall allows us to play the role of a Roman leader, whose task is to lead the legions to victory over the barbarians. The title allows us to play scenarios based on the real battles fought by Julius Caesar.

Mechanics

Shieldwall is a strategic game in which we play the Roman general and lead our units into battle. We have direct control over only one character, but we can give commands to our soldiers using the command system. The player's goal is to take over all victory points on the map. It's worth to start winning them as early as possible, because they speed up our acquisition of gold. This precious bullion acts as a currency and is generated automatically, it is the only raw material in the game. Thanks to it we can buy troops and upgrades.

We have 3 types of units at our disposal. Defenders can be left in our fortified main base, so they will automatically defend it. In addition, we have at our disposal the militia - the basic walking unit - and the legionnaires, who can be recruited after buying upgrades.

Upgrades are obtained for gold and take different forms. From the faster respawn of our hero, through the increased number of shells for soldiers, to the above mentioned access to the legionnaires.

Technical issues

It should be stressed that the game has a rather conventional and simplified visual setting. The design of the characters and their surroundings brings to mind a set of LEGO bricks. Even the "blood" left by fallen warriors resembles paint stains. This impression is intensified by the fact that they are not red, but different in colour (depending on the team to which the fallen warriors belonged).
