An action game shown from a first-person perspective. The game is a remake of hit game that was released in 1997. The title was developed by studio Flying Wild Hog in cooperation with publisher Devolver Digital. The protagonist of Shadow Warrior is a martial arts master Lo Wang who searches for a legendary blade Nobitsura Kage for the Zilla Enterprises corporation. Hordes of demons that managed to get into the human world are trying to stop him.
Shadow Warrior for PC, PS4 and XONE is a remake of the game known by the same name, created by 3D Realms Studio in 1997. The new edition was developed by Flying Wild Hog, a Polish studio known for a science-fiction FPS Hard Reset. The studio includes people who worked on such games as Painkiller, The Witcher 2, and Bulletstorm.
Plot
The game takes you to the Far East, where you can visit snow-covered mountains, dungeons, and Japanese gardens. The story follows the adventures of Lo Wang, a martial arts master who gets hired by Zilla Enterprises to find a legendary blade known as Nobitsura Kage. The hero discovers a mystical connection of the weapon with ancient gods from another dimension, and the world gets overcome by demons from hell. Wang’s goal is to send them back into the dark abyss and discover the truth behind the invasion of unearthly creatures. Hoji, a soul exiled from the mysterious land of the Ancients, helps him in this task.
Mechanics
In terms of gameplay Shadow Warrior for PC, PS4 and XONE resembles the original game, therefore you spend most of the time on killing hordes of enemies. The game is an old-school arcade FPP shooter, which puts a strong emphasis on melee combat. Therefore, Lo Wang uses both guns of various caliber and equipment characteristic of ninja warriors: deadly katanas and shurikens. The developers used proven solutions also when it comes to minor gameplay elements – healing system is based on first aid kits and there is no limit of weapons the hero may carry.
Character development system is an important feature too. There are three resources in the game that allow you to personalize your character. These are cash, ki crystals, and karma. Money allows you to modify the weapons owned by Lo Wang and replenish ammunition. Ki crystals and karma enable you to develop Lo Wang’s skills and powers (such as health regeneration, increased mobility, stunning opponents), and it is the element which allows you to personalize your game experience.
Technical aspects
Audiovisual binding of Shadow Warrior stands on a high quality level. There is a large number of details and many elements of the environment is destructible, which may also be effectively used in combat. For example, you can lure an enemy near a car and then blow it up or let the opponent in between explosive barrels and cause a chain reaction with just one shot.

PlayStation LifeStyle: 8.5 / 10 by Mark Labbe
Between the game's graphics, gameplay, and $40 price tag, Shadow Warrior is a definite buy. It offers hours of gory, hack-and-slash fighting, and focuses on just being a really fun game. If you are looking for developed characters or a story you can really get into, Shadow Warrior might not be for you. But, if you just want to kill hordes of enemies in brutal ways, you should probably pick up a copy.
Impulsegamer: 4.25 / 5 by Peter Bourke
Shadow Warrior successfully takes the best out of the 90's and turns it into a very amusing first person shooter that thankfully doesn't take itself too seriously… remember those serious Doom remakes? This is not the case with Shadow Warrior as it gives the player pure fun in not just the overtly gory violence, one-liners and jokes but the entire gaming atmosphere that is put together with a very amusing storyline with very memorable protagonists from the classic 90's!
GameCrate: 8 / 10 by Robert Workman
While Shadow Warrior is a no-frills kind of first-person shooter, it's one that will certainly stick with you, mainly due to the joy that hacking and slashing enemies brings. The upgrade system is superb, and the presentation is pretty sharp for a year-old port. It won't change the world like 2014's other brilliant shooters, but it's a good junk food snack while you're waiting for the next big thing. Now go get you some Wang!
