A brutal, dynamic action game set in a fantasy world. It was developed by DrinkBox - a studio popular for such games as Mutant Blobs Attack or Guacamelee. [1:17] Severed trailer #3
Game Revolution: 4 / 5 by Gil Almogi
Overall, Severed does a lot of good with its excellent and challenging combat, intricate dungeon maps full of collectibles, unique and visceral upgrade system, and a fantastic presentation. Its biggest shortcoming is its lack of opportunities to engage with its world and Sasha’s history, but with everything that works so well about the game, I can mostly forgive this slight. My roughly nine-hour experience was a great joy, filled with memorable sights, sounds, and (physical) touches. Maybe, like Okami for Playstation 2, it will be the console’s swan song, but it is hard to discredit a unique experience like this one purely for coming to the party so late.
PlayStation Universe: 9.5 / 10 by John-Paul Jones
A grim and foreboding fairytale liberally swathed in colourful style, Severed masterfully combines touch screen combat, metroidvania game design and hugely satisfying character progression to make the most essential PS Vita title to date. Severed is quite simply a handheld tour de force without equal.
Destructoid: 9.5 / 10 by Zack Furniss
When that's the worst I can come up with, it's clear to me that DrinkBox Studios knocked it out of the park. I'm glad the team took its time.
Severed Description
Severed on PSV, Switch etc. is a dynamic action game set in a fantasy atmosphere. The project was developed by the well-known Mutant Blobs Attack and the hit Guacamelee studio DrinkBox.
Story
Players take on the role of a warrior who, after waking up, discovers that she has lost her left hand and during her adventures will have to learn the truth about how her mutilation took place. The action is set in a land full of magic, fantastic civilizations and ancient ruins with an open structure, which we explore from the perspective of the first person. The authors have not introduced any artificial restrictions on the freedom of exploring the land and the player will die at most, having plunged into areas inhabited by too powerful enemies.
Mechanics
The game is mainly about engaging in dynamic battles with various enemies. The combat system is based on gestures and is easy to master, but reaching the mastery level requires a lot of work. Ordinary cuts are made by drawing lines in places we want to attack, and more complex techniques are activated by drawing appropriate symbols. Each opponent has their own fighting style and to win, we need to learn about their strengths and weaknesses. The mechanics of chopping off opponents of limbs also plays a key role. This is not only an effective way to eliminate enemies - such cut parts can then be attached to the heroine's body, increasing her combat potential and providing access to new combat techniques and spells.
Technical issues
The strong point of Severed for PSV platform, Switch etc. is an unusual graphic design, which was made in the style modeled on European comics for mature customers. The positive impressions are further enhanced by the minimalist interface, designed to make its elements appear on the screen as little as possible.
