Video game adaptation of a tabletop game set in the 1920+ Universe created by Jakub Rozalski. In this universe, the battlefields from the first half of the 20th century are filled not only with units one might know from history books but also mechs. In Scythe: Digital Edition the players become leaders of chosen factions with a mission to dominate Eastern Europe. The game features both single and multiplayer modes.
Scythe: Digital Edition is a digital adaptation of a tabletop game called Scythe. The game was developed by The Knights of Unity and published by Asmodee Digital.
Plot
The action of Scythe: Digital Edition is set in the 1920+ universe created by Jakub Rozalski – an alternate version of the year 1920, where battlefields are filled not only with infantry, cavalry and vehicles known from history books, but also mechs. Players become leaders of chosen factions with a mission to dominate Eastern Europe.
Mechanics
Upon starting the game, the players choose factions they want to lead and abilities necessary to complete the secret goal. One begins the game from a position predetermined by chosen faction's abilities and receives a precise number of given resources (strength, victory points, movement options, and popularity).
The game takes place on a map divided into hexagonal fields representing territories one has to conquer gaining access to more resources. On the controlled territories, one can erect different buildings (to strengthen his or her position), recruit units (soldiers and citizens) and activate mechs that are the trademark of this brand (their presence can prevent an opponent from attacking).
Interestingly enough, not everything depends on pure luck – apart from the aforementioned secret goal and random cards that the players draw (these cards can depict encounters with the local population of the in-game world or add temporary bonuses to one's faction), the end-game result is entirely dependent on player's decisions. Moreover, the game is not divided into rounds, and one cannot eliminate opponents entirely.
Game modes
Scythe: Digital Edition features a single player mode, in which one has to fight other factions controlled by the AI. Nonetheless, the game shines with its multiplayer mode (both local and online).
Technical aspects
The 2D visuals featured in Scythe: Digital Edition perfectly reflects the formula of the tabletop original. Players are bound to admire the illustrations created by the author of 1920+ Universe – Jakub Rozalski. The entire experience is well complemented by the atmospheric soundtrack.
