A free-to-play video games creator, based on Source 2 engine. s&box was developed by Facepunch Studios and is a spiritual successor to the best-selling Garry's Mod. We can use this tool to create and play shooters, platformers, racing games, logic titles and other projects.
s&box is a free-to-play platform for creating games based on the Source 2 engine. It was developed by the Facepunch Studios team, whose portfolio includes games such as Rust and Garry's Mod, and was described by the creators as a spiritual successor to the latter project.
Creator features
The main element of s&box is a creator that allows us to produce games (from shooters, through platformers and logic games, to racing titles) with action presented from various perspectives (from a bird's eye view, from the side, from the character's eyes or behind their back). Moreover, it allows for the development of own projects intended for virtual reality sets.
We are given a rich assortment of elements that we can place in our projects and we select them through a resource browser. Coding is done using the API C# interface (thanks to the Hotload function, there is no need to compile or restart the game to see changes in the code).
We create locations and worlds based on the terrain system, levels - using Valve's Hammer editor (which is itself susceptible to modifications), while we develop scripts using a visual tool called ActionGraph.
The entire creator is based on a scene system, allowing for immediate testing of our projects. We can share our finished games with the community, and there's nothing stopping us from freely checking out projects created by other players.
Coop and other game modes
In s&box we can play alone or in multiplayer mode (via the Internet, in a local network, on a split screen or a shared screen). We can check finished works with other players, as well as test our own productions while they are still being created.

Valve reached a deal with Garry's Mod creator. Players will earn money on Steam for games created in S&box
Garry Newman of Facepunch studio announced that he has come to an agreement with Valve and fan projects created in S&box can be sold on Steam. This will effectively give aspiring devs the possibility to create their own games on the Source 2 engine.
