In Rusty Lake: Roots, we assume the role of James Vanderboom who inherited a house and a special seed, which, if sown, will enable him to start his own family. Plot

In Rusty Lake: Roots, we assume the role of James Vanderboom. After the death of his uncle, he inherited a house and a special seed. According to the letter left by the deceased relative, sowing it will enable the protagonist to start his own family. The action of the said production takes place in the 19th and 20th century, and the player controls three generations of the Vanderboom family.

The on-screen events are surreal, and so are the characters of the story. The game is full of references to the previous titles of the studio, but their knowledge isn’t necessary to understand the plot.

Mechanics

The gameplay in Rusty Lake: Roots for PC, AND and iOS is based on exploration of the environment and solving both logic and environmental puzzles. In total, the game features over 30 levels filled with puzzles, which makes the title the biggest one in history of Rusty Lake so far. Moreover, talking to non-player characters we encounter, who have distinct personalities, is an important element of the production.

Similarly to other aspects of the game, puzzles also have unique concepts that can sometimes induce goosebumps. For example, to progress in the story, the player has to perform a voodoo ritual, use the Ouija board to summon a ghost, and conduct an unusual autopsy. Having completed the main storyline, we can also complete a set of bonus challenges.

Technical aspects

Rusty Lake: Roots is characterized by polished, two-dimensional graphics, while the gameplay is accompanied by a dark soundtrack. The controls were adjusted to the specifics of the individual target platforms — the PC version uses the mouse, while the mobile edition is based on touch.
