Rusted Moss is a 2D metroidvania platformer. It was created by a group of independent developers composed of faxdoc, happysquared and sunnydaze.
Plot
The story is set in an unusual postapocalypse, humanity on the brink of extinction due to an invasion by the fae. Cities lay in ruins, technologies now covered with rust. Humans, however, don't intend to surrender without a fight, having learned how to steal the enemy's magic and grant it to witches.
The player character is Fern, a young girl, seemingly a human loyalist. Beneath the facade, however, she's a changeling, a fae sleeper agent raised by unknowing human parents. Once she grows up, she decides to carry out her people's wishes and end humanity's dominance over the world.
Mechanics
Rusted Moss is a 2D metroidvania platformer. The player explores huge maps, gathers items, avoids hazards and fights enemies. Many paths are initially inaccessible, only reachable after gaining new abilities (which there's over a twenty of).
The combat is also quite mechanically deep. The game emphasizes gunplay, with Fern able to aim freely in any direction regardless of how she's moving.
Her equipment puts a new spin on the game as well. She's equipped with a grappling hook, which she can use to rotate 360 degrees around each grapple point. This makes both combat and exploration very unique compared to more usual platformers.
Game modes
The game only supports singleplayer.
Technical aspects
The visuals of Rusted Moss are simple, yet appealing, making use of old-school pixelart.
