Runespell: Overture is a production created by Mystic Box studio, which combines several genres. On the one hand we have mechanics based on poker hands, on the other hand we deal damage to characters and cast spells using special cards. The main character is the immortal Protestant Rosary, born of the god. During his life he changed his character many times. After the transformation, he lost his memory and started all over again. This time, however, he felt that he was called by a powerful, ancient force and decided to respond to her call.
During the campaign, the Misfit travels through medieval Great Britain, inhabited by dangerous beings from the world of fantasy and Celtic mythology. We move around the points marked on the map, talk to the characters we meet and fight. In this respect, Runespell: Overture is very much like the Puzzle Quest series.
Clashes with enemies take place on a separate board using a classic deck of cards and special spells, which you can buy from sellers you meet or get after defeating your opponent. At the beginning of the battle, the player's deck is divided into seven columns with the top card face up. The task is to fold the cards in such a way as to make the strongest poker hands possible. The better the combination, the more damage is dealt. During the turn, the player can also steal the opponent's cards and place them on their columns. We can cast spells by spending so-called points of rage, which we gain by dealing damage.
Obtained results can be compared with other players through extensive network statistics. Runespell: Overture also introduced a system of achievements.
The game is dominated by static, two-dimensional boards. The plot is depicted by means of drawings in fantasy style. Only during clashes we observe simple animations of damage and spells.
