Road 96 is an adventure game from Digixart studio. We play the role of a teenager who decides to escape from an authoritarian state. Together with her, we embark on a procedurally generated journey which, depending on our decisions, ends differently.
Road 96 is an adventure game, offering procedurally generated events. The game was developed by Digixart studio, also known from 11-11: Memories Retold and Lost in Harmony: Kaito's Adventure, in which we can find the developers involved in the creation of Valiant Hearts: The Great War. Road 96 is a game inspired by movies by Tarantino, Coen Brothers and Bong Joon-ho. The story is about a teenager who, wanting to get out of an authoritarian country, sets out on a long journey.
Plot
Road 96 starts in the summer of 1996 in the fictional authoritarian country of Petria. We take on the role of a teenager who wants to leave it. During her travels, the protagonist meets many interesting people, some of whom will want to help her, others not necessarily. The fate of the girl and perhaps the fate of the world depends on our choices.
Mechanics
Road 96 is an adventure game where the goal is to get to know the world around us and the people we meet. The game allows us to absorb the atmosphere of travel into the unknown. The game focuses on the player's choices and their consequences. Moreover, thanks to the procedurally generated adventure, it can surprise us.
Technical aspects
Digixanrt has paid a lot of attention to creating an eye-catching and pastel-coloured graphic design, and its style reminds us of the game Firewatch.
The developers have not forgotten about the moody soundtrack. During the journey we can listen to many hits from the 1990s.

Screen Rant: 4.5 / 5 by Rob Gordon
As such, Road 96 is incredible. It was an indie hit on its release for PC and Switch last year, and that success has easily converted over to other home console platforms. This is a fascinating, compelling, and immensely replayable experience that is certainly worth exploring.
Shacknews: 8 / 10 by Donovan Erskine
Road 96 is an adventure game that’s stuffed with fascinating characters. Everybody has a story, and the game does an excellent job at weaving those stories together in an interesting way. The use of music and the game’s art style also helps to elevate the experience. Road 96 is a bit bogged down by some UI issues and framerate drops, but that didn’t stop me from really enjoying the complete product.
TheGamer: 4 / 5 by Jade King
Much like the real world, everyone’s hopes and dreams are different, and it’s this uniqueness that makes them so undeniably beautiful. It’s a poetic struggle, and stopping to appreciate the instances of silence on a road filled with tragedy and heartbreak helps Road 96 feel like something I’ve never played before. Road 96 feels like an experience created by a studio that understands the fragility of the world we exist in, seeking to project these issues onto a fictional world where comparing them with our own is all too easy. Subtlety isn’t the objective here, and by pulling no punches, this game manages to say something well worth listening to.
