Riverbond Description
Riverbond is another production from the independent studio Cococucumber, known for its 2015 platform game Planet of the Eyes. This time, they offer a hack-and-slash for PC, PS4 and XONE.
Mechanics
The title is something in the vein of Bastion combined with Castle Crashers and The Legend of Zelda. Players take on the role of warriors who travel through a variety of fantastic locations, including the beyond, a level inspired by the Pac-Man series or the famous Q*bert.
Our main goal is to explore and fight. The game is not too complicated, because the developers tried to capture the spirit of older games. The combat system does not require players to use advanced tactics or to learn complex combos by heart. What counts instead is fast action and demolition of the environment. Locations built of voxels can be destroyed. Admittedly, we cannot turn everything into dust, but nothing stands in the way of, for example, shattering the rocks blocking our way or taking down a few columns.
During the clashes the heroes use a variety of weapons. They can use, for example, guns, sword, or exploding barrels on certain levels and throw them at enemies.
Game modes
The game has an arcade character and is focused primarily on good fun with friends. In this respect Riverbond offers a local co-op mode for up to 4 people.
Technical aspects
Riverbond is powered by the Unity technology, a popular engine used in a number of other productions, including Endless Space 2 and SUPERHOT. The game uses simple visuals - on the screen we observe angular characters moving through colorful locations shown in isometric projection. Developers, however, took care of implementing more advanced effects accompanying mainly the explosions, but above all to maintain a light, humorous atmosphere.
