River City Girls Description
River City Girls is a spin-off of the beat'em up series Kunio-kun (known in the West as River City), started in 1986. The game was developed by WayForward Technologies, the team responsible for such titles as DuckTales Remastered, The Mummy Demastered or Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. The title was published by Arc System Works.
Plot
The main characters of River City Girls are Kyoko and Misako, girls who are well-known to fans of Kunio and Riki. It is the task of the teenagers to save their beloved ones who have been kidnapped, but before they do, they will have to face countless thugs lurking in the streets of the eponymous River City.
Mechanics
The action in River City Girls is shown from the side. Six vast regions of the city are waiting to be visited, which we traverse while dealing primarily with the elimination of enemy troops. During clashes we block enemy attacks and execute quick counter-attacks, chain our blows into spectacular combinations or finally use powerful special attacks. Girls do not have to fight with bare fists, because they can also use various melee weapons. Interestingly, by dragging defeated opponents to our side, we can gain additional support.
As we progress, girls gain new levels of experience. In addition, their combat potential can be increased by buying them new equipment or food, which improves their stats or unlocks special skills. It is worth noting, that apart from the main tasks, there are also various side missions waiting to be completed.
Game modes
River City Girls can be played solo or in local co-op mode.
Technical aspects
River City Girls features colorful, two-dimensional visuals, which in terms of style refer to the era of 16-bit games. The game is accompanied by a dynamic, synthpop soundtrack, signed by such artists as Megan McDuffee, Christina Vee and Chipzel.
