The fourth expansion for the RimWorld strategy game, introducing horror elements. In RimWorld: Anomaly our colonists encounter a monolith and wake up an ancient being. This leads to plagues of the undead, dealing with cultists and avoiding invisible hunters.

Plot
Gameplay

RimWorld: Anomaly is an expansion to the space strategy game originally released in 2018. The add-on is maintained in a horror atmosphere, introducing many threats our colonists must face. The game was prepared by the authors of the base version, namely the independent Ludeon studio. The creators drew inspiration from iconic horror works, including H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythology, or movies like The Cabin in the Woods, The Thing and the Hellraiser series.

Plot

The story begins like in a classic horror tale - with the awakening of a dark force thirsty for blood. When the colonists come across a mysterious monolith, they attract the attention of a mad, mechanical entity. From that moment on, the world is flooded with cultists, undead and monsters straight from hell, and people become victims of plague or madness. Our heroes can either stand up to fight evil or bring about destruction, using dark powers.

Gameplay

The Anomaly add-on introduces a number of new creatures and mechanics to the base version of RimWorld. The mortal danger to the colony is posed by exceptionally resilient undead, as well as an invisible hunter terrorizing us every night, or a fleshy creature gradually filling the map with its tissue. In the expansion we not only resist them, but thanks to a special center, we catch and examine enemies. In this way, we learn the secrets of our enemies - some of them we can also completely get rid of, heading towards their lairs. In addition, we get access to tools like experimental serum, body modification or a flamethrower.

Followers of the monolith are also our enemies. They build statues in its honor, kidnap colonists and carry out filthy rituals. One of them is a bloody rain causing fury among people and animals. Cultists can also choose an individual target, for example, depriving them of youth or memory. RimWorld: Anomaly allows us to use the worshipers' weapons against them by performing similar rituals ourselves.

The expansion forces the player to carefully monitor of the colonists. This allows to find among them those who have been infected by the parasite and may turn against us.
