Resistor is a unique cross of a car racing game and an RPG. It was developed by an indie studio Long Way Home and published by pQube.

Plot

Resistor is set in a grim future, in 2060. Governments around the world have collapsed, replaced by corporate-ruled city-states. Their inhabitants live in luxury, but outside their walls stretch out sandy wastelands where people fight for survival. To save face, some corporations hold an annual racing tournament, in which the main prize is obtaining citizen status, and thus the right to live in a city.

The main protagonist is Aster, a young girl participating in the competition sponsored by Dekker Industries to provide her sick mother with health care. As she fights for a better life, she learns of the corporate utopia's dark side, declaring war on the system and its supporters.

She's not alone on her quest, as over time she starts leading a team of other racers. How her story ends depends on the quests we complete and the plotlines we unlock.

Mechanics

Resistor is a third-person game (TPP). It's set in a wide open world, traversible in a car or on foot (for example, when exploring city buildings or desert outposts). The game's driving force are main quests, alongside numerous side missions and optional activities. Fierce races against other competitors are also a large part of the game. Apart from standard competitions we'll occasionally face our greatest rivals in boss fights.

As we progress, we earn reputation, unlocking new areas and various improvements of our headquarters. Overtime we also unlock new parts and upgrades for our vehicle, increasing our chances of winning the tournament. As the plot progresses, more people join our team; developing bonds with them unlocks bonuses that affect our performance on the track.
