The main character in Realms of the Haunting is Adam Randall, son of a pastor, who, at the request of a mysterious priest, sets off to a village in Great Britain called Hellston. The priest gives the young man the task of examining the abandoned property. Adam does not allow himself to be asked for a long time, all the more so because the huge building is allegedly connected with the mysterious death of his father, who served as a local pastor in Hellston. Soon after arriving at the estate, Randall will discover that it was built on the ruins of a temple dedicated to Satan, and the mysterious priest is in fact a 500 year old sorcerer, dreaming of flooding the world with creatures from Hell of the line.
The authors of Realms of the Haunting tried to combine a classic adventure with an action game set in the first person perspective. Both elements are extremely important in Gremlin Interactive's product, although logical puzzles seem to dominate in many moments. Fans of exploiting grey cells must bear in mind, however, that from time to time they will have to face numerous representatives of the hellish hordes and these will be typically arcane battles, similar to the struggles with traditional FPS: Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, or Blood.
During the game Adam Randall moves between four dimensions: Hellud (earthly), Sheol (hellish), Raquia (spiritual) and Arqua (divine). In every world there are hundreds of locations waiting for exploration, filled with objects, NPCs and a whole lot of monsters. In the game we move like in other FPS, using the cursor keys. However, the mouse cursor is still active, with the help of which we can talk to the characters we meet, collect things scattered here and there, and above all solve riddles.
The game offers spoken dialogues and nearly an hour and a half of FMV (Full Motion Video) interludes. In order to put it together, the authors needed as many as four CDs.
