Ravenfield is a team FPS game featuring colorful visuals. The game has been designed solely to deliver the single-player experience. A player gets to control a soldier fighting either for a blue or a red team in battles resembling those featured in the Battlefield series. The game is available on PC.

Ravenfield has been developed by one man – Johan "SteelRaven7" Hassel. He has already created other games during events such as game jams; these games include Root Arena, a small multiplayer shooter game developed during the 2013's 7DFPS.

Mechanics

Ravenfield for PC is a first-person shooter (FPS) game based on single player mode. One assumes the role of a private fighting numerous battles for one of the chosen factions – Eagle (blue) and Raven (red). One can fight either on foot or inside numerous vehicles.

The weapons arsenal comprises a number of angular representations of firearms used by the infantry units, featuring automatic rifle inspired by AK-47, a rocket launcher somewhat similar to the American Javelin, a sniper rifle, a pistol (either with or without a silencer), a revolver, grenades, and even a device looking as a variation on the Carl Gustaf recoilless rifle. When exploring a map, a player can find special weapons, such as the heavy machine gun with unlimited ammunition. The equipment of an infantry trooper is well complemented by additional pieces of gear such as ammunition and medication packs as well as a wrench, which can be used to fix a tank or to kill an opponent by heating them in the head.

Among the available vehicles, one can find tanks, jeeps equipped with machine guns, choppers, airplanes, and even gunboats (small warships) equipped with cannons and rocket launchers.

Game modes

Ravenfield for PC introduces only a single player experience, in which one can enjoy two game modes: Instant Action and Campaign.

The Instant Action mode allows a player to quickly define the main parameters and jump right in the middle of a battle. One can select a map, determine the number of soldiers controlled by the AI, enable the day and night cycle, disable vehicles, adjust the balance between the opposing teams, and most importantly, select the rules.

The Instant Action mode delivers three sets of rules: Point Match, Battalions, and Spec Ops. Point Match is a variation on the Conquest mode known from Battlefield series. In this mode, one is tasked with capturing all the flags, disabling the enemy soldiers' respawns. Additionally, one earns points for killing the enemies. In the Battalions mode, both armies have limited forces at their disposal, and players are tasked with eliminating their opponents – the first team that runs out of available soldiers, loses. The Spec Ops mode allows a player to assume the role of small team member tasked with a particular mission – depending on the chosen faction, a player has to defend (as a member of the red team) or attack (when playing for the blue faction) a target location.

In the campaign mode, a player has to complete consecutive battlefields he chooses from the global strategic map. Conquering locations provides one with resources necessary to improve his army. Each victory brings us closer to the final objective – conquering enemy's headquarters.

Technical aspects

Ravenfield delivers simplistic visuals. 3D models are composed of several polygons often of one color, which positively affects the clearness and visibility.

The PC release of Ravenfield has been based on the Unity engine. In order to design the content, the developer has used the Blender software, while programming matters were resolved with C#.

The game uses the Steam Workshop system in order to allow players to share the content they create such as new maps, weapons, and vehicles.
