Quote is an action RPG developed by an independent studio called Vindit. The game, published on PC, is a debut project of the aforementioned studio. When working on the game described herein, the developers drew most of their inspirations from the iconic Little Big Adventure.
Plot
The game takes a player on a journey to a fantasy world, which has been engulfed in chaos for many years. In order to resolve this issue Bliss – the god of ignorance – decided to destroy all the books and as a result, erase the entire knowledge his believers have been gathering for centuries. This, however, did not last for long – people forgot about the grim past and the realm was once again flooded with books along with new ideas. Once again, the world is on the brink of destruction.
Luckily, Bliss has one more ace up her sleeve – Novella, who is tasked with erasing the entire knowledge from the world. The main protagonist is left with no other choice than to attempt to destroy every book, kill every writer she encounters, and rid people's minds of any complex thoughts. On her quest, Novella is accompanied by her faithful bird companion, Tatters, who can help her significantly in carrying out her objective and defeat the encountered enemies.
Mechanics
Players observe from the top-down perspective how the main protagonist explores the partially destroyed world, searches for the titular Quotes, burn multiple books (this regards both single volumes and entire libraries), and fights the encountered foes. A key to success lies in mounting spectacular attack combinations during the real-time battles – this way, the main protagonist is able to inflict serious damage to all the enemies. Interestingly enough, new abilities and special powers are unlocked by feeding the books to Tatter – this allows a player to stand a chance against increasingly powerful enemies.
Game modes
Quote for PC offers two game modes – apart from the story campaign, one can play the Library mode, in which all the contents are procedurally generated, and a player is tasked with eliminating consecutive opponents – this way, Novella gains access to new finishing moves, alternative costumes, and bonus story scenarios.
Technical aspects
Players are bound to appreciate the visuals featured in Quote for PC – the style implemented into the game resembles animated movies, while the battles are even more spectacular due to special effects, such as flashes and explosions. Another thing worth noticing is the nature of the in-game world and its inhabitants – the cartoonish creatures a player has to fight look as if they were taken straight out of the paintings by Hieronymus Bosch – some of these creatures exhibit humanoid features, while others resemble genetic hybrids of various animals. However, the locations a player gets to explore include idyllic landscapes as well as the insides of different buildings with utility goods designed in an unusual fashion – e.g. a bathtub with four golden paws. The entire experience is complemented by the dedicated soundtrack, which intensifies the atmosphere of the peculiar adventure.
