Puyo Puyo Champions (also known as Puyo Puyo e-Sport) is the next installment in the Puyo Puyo series, which began in 1991. This is a puzzle game combining Tetris and Dr. Mario mechanics, released on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Player's task is to arrange the colored balls to get as many points as possible.
Mechanics
Puyo Puyo Champions is an arcade puzzle game in which colorful puzzles are stacked together and can be rotated by 90 degrees. Player's task is to place at least four blocks in a horizontal or vertical line (however, the more, the better), in the same color next to each other. They disappear from the board and the player gets points for them. The goal is to score as many points as possible.
Puyo Puyo Champions has a single player mode, but focuses primarily on multiplayer gameplay, whether it's local or online, with up to eight players at a time.
The emphasis on multiplayer gameplay is related to the complex competitive aspect. It is based on the fact that every move players take has an impact on what happens on the opponents' boards. Even if one has a situation on his board under control, it can change in a second, because through the chain reactions of the opponent (matching the forms so that they disappear one by one) one's board flooded with new balls one has to deal with as quickly as possible, in order not to lose.
Puyo Puyo Champions has several gameplay modes based on the rules of the second installment and Puyo Fever. These include Tournament Mode (a tournament for eight players), Puyo League (ranking games), or the above-mentioned local multiplayer or single-player tournaments.
Before the start of each game, players choose one of the 24 characters they want to control. Most of the available heroes can be found in the previous versions of the game.
Technical aspects
Puyo Puyo Champions features a replay system that captures the best moments of gameplay, which can then be rewatched in order to analyze new strategies.
The style of the game refers to the style known from Japanese animations for children, with very vivid and colorful graphics.
