Proven Lands for PC is a complex mix of different genres, including survival sandbox, action RPG, and a roguelike taking place in a science-fiction universe and seen from an isometric perspective. This complex title was developed by a few independent authors known as thesetales.

Plot

The game tells a story of a crew member that has survived a spaceship crash and has landed on an inhospitable planet cut off from the rest of the survivors. From now on, our hero has to fend for his own by gathering resources and supplies, fighting against wild animals, satisfying his basic needs, building shelters and creating tools, and so on. Once we’ve managed to fulfil the primary needs, we can start developing more advanced objects (e.g. drones), structures, or vehicles. Continuous progress can end up with a rediscovery of space travel, enabling us to finally leave the initial planet and embark on a journey to discover new worlds.

Mechanics

Fortunately, we are not alone in the universe. The player is accompanied by an NPC companion (a cat, with other forms unlocked later), while our spaceship can encounter numerous alien races with whom we can develop more or less civil relations – our standing can differ depending on whether we’ve encountered a peaceful tribe, or a belligerent slave hunter fleet. The game also contains a class system – the player begins as a lift operator, and can develop into a medic, pilot, engineer, soldier, scientist, or an android.

All content of Proven Lands is procedurally generated, including the environment type (over 30 different world types). As can be expected, other elements, including found items, encounters (both with the planet’s fauna and flora and alien representatives), and assigned tasks, are completely random, with their locations and appearance decided upon the AI, which also works as a Game Master that control the events at hand.

However, it should be mentioned that procedural content and AI “direction” is a part of the sandbox mode. Other than that, the authors prepared an extensive story campaign that tells the story of an unlucky spaceship and its stranded crew. Interestingly enough, the story spans through five episodes, released over an extended period of time – each chapter contains additional items, creatures, alien races, tasks, etc.

Technical Aspects

As was mentioned earlier, the game sports three-dimensional visuals powered by Unity engine. Moreover, Proven Lands for PC offers full support for user-created content.
