A post-apocalyptic role-playing game by Ukrainian studio Best Way (Soldiers: Heroes of World War II, Faces Of War, Men of War). The story of Project 5, previously known as Nuclear Union, is set in an alternative reality, where the Cuban Missile Crisis ended with a nuclear war and the death of most of human population. Some citizens of the Soviet Union, however, managed to take shelter in bunkers.
Nuclear Union is a post-apocalyptic cRPG. It is a production of an Ukrainian studio, Best Way. This team is well known to fans of war games thanks to such games as Soldiers: People of Honor, Faces of War, and Men of War.
The action takes place in an alternate vision of year 2012. In the game’s reality, the Cuban Crisis ended in a nuclear war that wiped out most of the human population. What is worse, almost all of the planet became heavily irradiated. The Soviet Union, however, was ready for this disaster. Before the outbreak of the conflict, large numbers of people were evacuated to special underground bunkers. The survivors spent the next few decades hidden in these structures. Eventually it was decided that they would go back to the surface and rebuild the civilization. The players assume the role of a pilot who took part in the bombing of the United States in 1962. At the start of the game, the character is about 70 years old.
Nuclear Union is a role-playing game. The game begins with setting the abilities of the character. The protagonist is described by a series of characteristics and a list of skills. With the progress of the campaign, we gain experience points, which can then be spent on development of our character. The gameplay involves mainly exploration of the virtual world, completing missions, and collecting items. During our adventures, we encounter not only survivors, but also animals which were transformed into bloodthirsty mutants as a result of radiation.
The combat system is real time and combines elements of RPG and arcade. The action is observed from behind the shoulder of the character, and shooting requires good accuracy. At the same time, GATS system allows for a brief moment of slower time passage and calm targeting of a specific body part of an enemy, and each successful hit is rewarded with a camera zoom. The game is also enriched by stealth sections and puzzles.
