Princess Maker Refine was created by Japanese studio Gainax, supervised by one of its co-founders, Takami Akai. You play as a hero, who already defeated the dark lord and saved the citizens of the kingdom invaded by the villain.

Princess Maker Refine for PC is a unique management game, in which you look after your foster daughter and decide the potential shape of her adult life in the process. The game was originally released in 1991 in Japan for MSX and PC-98. It was developed by legendary Japanese studio Gainax (known for Neon Genesis Evangelio, Nadia, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann) and one of its co-founders, Takami Akai. Princess Maker Refine is based on the improved and extended edition for PlayStation 2. Since its original release, the Princess Maker series had five stand-alone installments, both for PC and consoles. 2016 marks the game's first official Western release.

Plot

In Princess Maker Refine you play as a hero, who defeated an evil dark lord and saved many people in the kingdom he'd invaded. Tired of adventuring, the hero decides to settle down, adopt a war orphan and together with her help the country to rebuild.

Mechanics

Your task is to take care of your daughter, as well her education and skills, which will affect her adult life. You have eight years to raise the girl. Each year is divided into four seasons, dozens of days each. The skills and personality of your daughter are described with numerical values and stats. You decide on her daily schedule, what tasks she does and what she learns. The girls can e.g. take up craftsmanship or magic, or become a warrior and participate in a tournament. When your daughter turns 18, you unlock one of the 74 available endings, which depend on her career path—this, in turn, is influenced by her experience and skills.

Technical aspects

Princess Maker Refine featured improved visuals and sounds. All of the art in the game have been remade under the supervision of their original author.
