developer: HEROZ publisher: The Pokemon Company Official website
Developed by HEROZ, Pokémon Duel for AND and iOS is a mobile battle strategy that uses modified version of the rules from Pokémon Trading Figure Game. This is a free-to-play production with microtransactions.
Plot
The history begins when the player – a Pokémon trainer – arrives on the artificial island popular with tourists – Carmonte Island. The hero dreams of becoming a hotel industry magnate, and the best way to achieve it, is to win the Pokémon tournament – the winner will receive the deed to the island’s most luxurious hotel – the Jewel Tower. The production features Pokémon from the sixth generation which was firstly introduced in Pokemon X and Pokemon Y published on Nintendo 3DS in 2013.
Mechanics
Pokemon Duel released on AND and iOS is a strategy, in which rules are loosely based on the original tabletop game. Gameplay comes down to fighting turn-based battles with Pokémon figures. You begin with just a few basic creatures, but with the progress, you get access to more powerful ones, each having unique abilities and special moves.
During combat, you command teams of up to six Pokémon. Both opponents begin on the opposite sides of the map which has a net showing predefined move paths in the middle. The one who leads at least one creature to the starting position of the opponent – wins. This imposes on players not only coming up with fighting tactics, but also figuring out how to effectively block the enemy.
Technical aspects
The title features both a single player campaign and multiplayer. In contrast to many cardboard games adaptations, the single player mode does not serve just as a simple addition, but is diligently-developed, especially in terms of the AI. One of the main reasons The Pokemon Company chose HEROZ as the developer, is the fact that they are responsible for Shogi Wars – a game with AI able to take on professional players of this chess variation popular in Japan.
