"The Worst Film in the History of Cinema" is the name of Plan 9 from Outer Space from 1959, directed by Ed Wood. The story of alien invaders who planned to conquer the Earth with an army of living corpses has become a permanent part of the science fiction genre, even though only a blind man could call this film a success. In 1992, Gremlin Graphics decided to reach for the cult title in its own way and prepared an adventure game, loosely referring to the story told in the original.
The main character of the game is an employee of a film studio, who receives from his supervisor a task related to the recovery of original tapes with the film Plan 9 from Outer Space. It is suspected that behind the theft there is a duplicate of Bela Lugosiego, an actor who died more than 30 years earlier during the production of the painting.
Plan 9 from Outer Space is a classic adventure that uses the point & click interface. All commands, and there are ten of them in total, are selected using the menu in the lower right corner of the screen. The other operating elements do not differ from the solutions used in other productions of this type - this applies to the conversation with encountered characters (selection of dialogues from the list) and the use of objects (by constructing sentences). Both the puzzles and the scenario - the two most important elements in the adventures - are at the right level and will surely appeal to the species' maniacs.
Gremlin Graphics' product boasts a nice visual setting of the visited locations (there are more than seventy of them in total), where animated characters appear in addition. The only graphic drawback is the unfortunate system of displaying comments on our actions, which is not easy to read when performing several actions, one after the other. Of course, the game in Plan 9 from Outer Space is accompanied by an interesting background music, referring to the atmosphere of the film's original.
To sum up, this is a pretty successful product, which should not necessarily be received through the prism of Ed Wood's film. On the contrary - the game is more interesting and addictive than the original. The fact that during the game we will see fragments of the original painting from 1959 does not bother us. The projection is connected with one of the most important tasks facing the player - not wanting to spoil the fun, I'll put on this element a curtain of silence....
